A Word from Cam

Cameron Allan - President

Hi all. I'm Cam your president. Below you will find a little bit about me.

What's my degree?

I'm studying geography with transport studies, but have always been interested in emergency medicine. When I was younger my dream job was to be an interior ambulance designer because I also had a strong interest in ergonomics. How to design something to make it function well, but not necessarily look nice. Once I realised an interior ambulance designer was probably not a job that really existed (how often are ambulances redesigned) I let go of that dream and looked for something else. That interest in ergonomics grew into the ergonomics of a city and how to design a city such that it has everything it needs and that then developed into my interest for transport studies. I always felt that I abandoned my emergency medicine interest – hence I joined the Uni CFR scheme.

Why do I like the Leeds Uni CFR scheme?

When you are at University in any city you are very much living in a bubble. You socialise with people at university and you often live in the student area of the city. When I joined Leeds Uni I wanted to see what life was like outside that bubble. See what life was like for the "real" Leeds resident. The CFR scheme has allowed me to do that.

Funniest CFR moment?

When we arrived on what we thought was the scene – there was an ambulance outside the house, and asked the crew if they needed any assistance. They said "no" so we messaged ambulance control and stood ourselves down, only to get a message from ambulance control 20 seconds later to say that the scene we were supposed to be at was two doors down the road. An ambulance had been called to two different addresses right next to each other. Oops – lesson learned – always check the address properly.

What I enjoy doing outside of Uni and CFR?

Back at home I am a flat water kayak racing coach, and coach children how to kayak on a regular basis. In my spare time I often design transport plans for various cities around the UK.

Best story:

Getting rescued by Spanish Police Helicopter from the side of a mountain.

Worst skill:

Joke telling – I often accidentally say the punchline first.
